Dakota South Teen

Peer-to-peer education is one of the most effective tools to encourage safe driving behavior in teenagers. One state seeing the benefits of such programs is South Dakota, whose Office of Highway Safety used peer-to-peer education as the basis for its Lesson Learned program, which is now in its second year.

Supported by the South Dakota Broadcasters Association, Lesson Learned offers students the chance to win a total of $20,000 - $10,000 each for themselves and their school - in reward for watching a hard-hitting video on safe driving. The video features real teens Adam and Cassie, who were involved in life-threatening crashes and aim to help other teens learn from their experiences. Their stories touch upon some of the most widespread behavioral issues teen drivers face, speaking to the importance of seat belt use as well as the dangers of distracted driving. The cash prizes are sponsored by the broadcasters.

After teens watch the video, they are able to sign up for the sweepstakes, through which students and their schools are entered to win the $10,000 grand prize. Resources and materials are also available for parents and teachers, including information on laws, social media kits, flyers, lesson plans, and additional videos.

"Our lessons gave the students a foundation to grow on as they mature and grow to become better people. By being a part of this program, it reminded us - teen teachers- how we should incorporate the lessons into our own lives and be good role models for the students."- Chesney

" I was thrilled to watch the teen teachers gain huge amounts of confidence by working through the lessons, adding their own ideas to the lessons, working as a team and practicing public speaking. In the end, we all witnessed the value of teen teachers presenting the character lessons to younger students and it left the elementary classrooms begging for more."

At sunset, they landed at the Hancock County Airport in Kentucky. Too young to rent a car or hotel room, the teens stayed overnight in the General Aviation Fixed Based Operator. They were able to access an airport crew car for an hour to grab a pizza.

An academic environment for struggling adolescents is ideal for teen boys and girls who simply cannot function in a typical classroom. Whether due to psychological, social or addiction constraints, adolescents often find it difficult to learn in an environment that is full of peer-related pressure. Through our evidence-based treatment program, our residents thrive in and out of the classroom. Our goal is to involve the entire family, so the bonds between the adolescent and their family are renewed and strengthened.

We offer a calm, controlled environment that allows troubled adolescents to feel safe in their medical care. Our Co-Ed Program teaches teen boys and girls how to interact appropriately with members of the opposite sex, so they learn the boundaries of respect. This environment fosters an understanding between the sexes, so they learn to co-exist and realize they truly are not so different after all. The tools they are given in our program will carry them through the rest of their life.

Unfortunately, the teenage years can be difficult for parents too. Often, parents of teen boys and girls feel helpless in understanding how to help their child get back on the right path. Though parents often blame themselves for their child going astray, it is important they realize that addiction and mental health issues know no bounds. They strike teen boys and girls from all walks of life.

Our treatment program gives hope to the entire family because we encourage everyone to be involved in the recovery. Troubled adolescents from South Dakota learn to not only love themselves, but to respect and foster the meaningful relationships in their lives. Though being pulled away from home is not easy, it helps to awaken lucid thinking teen boys and girls who have gone astray. While we work to help them overcome their addictions and counsel them on their mental health concerns, we are laying a foundation that will lead them to becoming a fully functioning young adult.

In court, the teen said he understood he was giving up his right to argue that he was mentally incompetent at the time of the shooting and that his case should be transferred to juvenile court, where he could have been imprisoned only until the age of 21. He also said he understood he was giving up his right that the judge should suppress statements he made to law enforcement and block all evidence from a search of his phone and home. He also agreed with a special part of the plea deal that he is giving up his right to appeal.
